Orphan Care Ministry
Foster and Adoption
About Our Ministry
Our Mission: South Sound Church Orphan Care Ministry is dedicated to being an advocate for children in distress and their families.
We exist to show the love of Christ to every child in need and live out James 1:27 which reads, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” Our mission is to help remove barriers to adoption and support those families that have chosen to care for orphans through foster care and adoption.
Our Vision: We desire for every orphan and child in distress a loving Christian home to call their own. Our hope is that every child in the foster system and orphan around the world would be adopted and experience the love and redemption of Christ as modeled by a loving Christian family.
Financial Assistance for Adoption Expenses:
One of our goals is to help remove barriers to adoption. One of the largest of these barriers can be financial. That’s why we started a fund to offer zero interest short-term loans to qualifying families to help them cover some of the up-front costs of adoption such as attorney fees and agency fees. Often families don’t have the thousands of dollars needed to cover these expenses at the time when they are needing to be paid. These expenses are typically reimbursed by the State of Washington in a foster-to-adopt situation, or through federal tax credits if adopting through a private agency. The families borrowing the funds agree to pay their loan back when they are reimbursed, freeing those funds up again for another family. Please consider being a monthly supporter of our ministry so we will be able to help more families in this way. You can donate by writing “Orphan Care” on the memo line of your check & dropping it in the offering basket on Sundays, mailing it to the church, or by visiting our Online Giving page right here on our website. Make your donation designating the funds to the "Orphan Care Ministry".
Monthly Adoption/Foster Family Support Group and Dinner
Working with Youth For Christ (YFC), we started a monthly support group open to foster and adoptive families in our community. It does not matter if you are a foster family licensed through a private agency like Olive Crest or YFC, or if you are licensed through Washington State DSHS . . . or if you have adopted domestically or internationally . . . all are welcome. We meet on the third Tuesday of each month, 6pm here at the church. We offer a hot meal to the families and time for everyone to visit, and for new friendships to grow. The children then go to child care and the parents get time sharing their struggles and their wins, time to pray together and support each other. Periodically, we watch a training video and foster families can count that time toward their continuing education requirements to maintain their foster licenses.
In order to have the greatest positive impact on orphan care in the South Sound and around the world, it is critical that the body of Christ work together. To that end, we work with other churches, organizations, adoption ministries, foster care licensing agencies, and DSHS in a combined effort to support families as they travel the road through foster care & adoption. We are open to working with groups and organizations that will help us to get children into Christian foster and adoptive homes.
Do You Have Two to Four Hours A Month?
We are in need of volunteers to work as baristas in Kathy’s Corner Coffee Shop one to two Sundays a month. The funds generated through Kathy’s Corner go right back to the orphan care ministry. You’ll have fun & learn how to make an amazing cup of coffee. Like to work with kids? We are looking for child care volunteers to help at our monthly support group & dinner.
Ways You Can Support this Ministry:
Prayer: Please pray that God will always be at the heart of this ministry & lead us in the way he would have us go. Please pray for wisdom and for doors to be opened so we can have the biggest impact on children and families in the South Sound and around the world.
Adopt or Become a Licensed Foster Parent: If you feel God is calling you to this vital way of supporting children, please prayerfully consider it. It is not easy, in fact, it can be difficult at times, but you will not find a more rewarding experience anywhere. As Christians, we are all adopted into God’s family through his son Jesus Christ. Becoming a foster or adoptive parent & bringing children into our homes is our way of showing the love of Christ to children who desperately need it.
Grab a Cup of Coffee: The coffee is AWESOME & funds from Kathy’s Corner go directly to support SSC Orphan Care Ministry.
Financial Support: If you are presently supporting this ministry through a monthly donation, THANK YOU. We humbly ask that you continue to do that. If you are not currently a monthly supporter, we ask that you prayerfully consider it. Any amount is appreciated and no amount is too small. One time gifts are also appreciated. You can donate by writing “Orphan Care” on the memo line of your check & dropping it in the offering basket on Sundays, or by going to the church website, and making your donation there, designating the funds to this ministry. It takes many of us doing are part to move this ball forward, so THANK YOU for your support!
Volunteer: We are always looking for dedicated volunteers to help with child care on support dinner nights, as well as baristas for Kathy’s Corner coffee shop. These are just a couple of the ways you can volunteer your time and it can take as little as 2 hours each month.
Thank you for your support of this important ministry! If you have any questions or would like to be involved, please contact us.

Adoption Ministry 1:27 of Youth With A Mission (YWAM) –
www.adoptionministry127.com – What if we could get to some of the most vulnerable families before they completely fell apart? What if we could do this in partnership with the local Ethiopian Church who is positioned on the front lines of this crisis? What if, together, we could not only care for widows and orphans, but actually prevent more people from becoming widows and orphans? What if we together could actually see vulnerable families go from brokenness and helplessness to restoration and hope? Adoption Ministry 1:27 was established to do such a work. Our Mission is to partner with the Ethiopian Church to care for widows, orphans and vulnerable families. Our ultimate goal, however, is orphan prevention and family restoration.
Christian Alliance For Orphans –
www.christianalliancefororphans.org – The Christian Alliance for Orphans unites more than 150 respected Christian organizations and a national network of churches. Working together, our joint initiatives inspire and equip Christians to “defend the fatherless” (Isaiah 1:17). Ultimately, we seek to stimulate and help grow Christian communities committed to adoption, foster care and global orphan care in the local church. Our united efforts include the annual Summit conference, the Orphan Sunday campaign, the Global Movements Initiative, the National Foster Care Initiative, and an array of other shared undertakings. As the Alliance helps Christians understand God’s call to care for the orphan and equips them for effective response, the impact reaches far beyond a single program or met need. Rather, an ever-expanding army of passionate advocates invest time, talent and treasure in a personal and sustained commitment to caring for orphans in the name of Christ.
Focus on the Family, iCare About Orphans –
www.icareaboutorphans.org – We believe every child deserves to know the love of a forever family. Lifesong for Orphans – www.lifesongfororphans.org
We seek to mobilize the church, His body, where each member can provide a unique and special service: some to adopt, some to care, some to give. “Our Children” will have: No want for food, clothing, medical care, or shelter…Fundamental Christian training and discipleship…A quality education to provide a foundation for the future…Continued love and support as they transition into adult living. 100% of all donations to Lifesong for Orphans will go to caring for orphans (no administrative costs will be deducted).
Olive Crest – www.olivecrest.org – We work to meet the individual needs of children in crisis by providing foster care, adoption, safe homes, counseling and education for both youth and parents. Innovative programs reflect our conviction that strengthening the family is one of the most powerful ways to help heal children.
Youth For Christ (YFC) Foster Care – www.tacomayfc.org/ministries/foster_care –
Foster Care serves children in the foster care system by recruiting, training, certifying, and supporting Christian foster families. Our goal is to provide excellent care for children until they can be safely returned to their families. For those children not able to return home, the Tacoma YFC Foster Care team works to connect them with YFC adoptive families. WHAT WE BELIEVE…We believe foster parenting is a calling…We believe in the restoration of children…We believe in the reconciliation of families…We believe every child deserves a permanent family.
